In 1948, Zionist militias caused the Nakba by destroying 500 Palestinian villages and forcibly displacing over 750,000 Palestinians (approximately half of Palestine's population). These militias also killed more than 15,000 civilians.
In 1987, the First Intifada erupted on 9 December after an Israeli truck driver killed four Palestinian workers at the Erez checkpoint in Gaza. The uprising was fueled by twenty years of Israeli military occupation, intensified settlement construction, and increasing repression. Israeli occupation forces killed between 1,087 and 1,204 Palestinians, including at least 241 children. More than 100,000 Palestinians were injured, approximately 120,000 were imprisoned, and 2,532 had their homes demolished. The Israeli government implemented a policy of deliberately breaking the bones of protesters, and many Palestinians were routinely tortured.
In 1967, the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) caused the Naksa by seizing and occupying the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, and the Sinai Peninsula. Israeli occupation forces forcibly displaced approximately 300,000 Palestinians—many of whom were already refugees from 1948—and demolished entire communities, including the Mughrabi Quarter in Jerusalem and the villages of Imwas, Yalo, and Bayt Nuba.
Since 1990, Israeli occupation forces have repeatedly violated Al-Aqsa Mosque through raids, restrictions, and attacks on worshippers. On 8 October 1990, Israeli Border Police killed 17 Palestinians and wounded over 150 in what became known as the Al-Aqsa Massacre. On 15 April 2022, Israeli forces stormed the mosque using tear gas and stun grenades, injuring around 160 Palestinians and arresting 400. In April 2023, Israeli police raided the mosque twice in one day during Ramadan, injuring at least 50 people and arresting over 400.
In 2000, the Second Intifada erupted after Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon's provocative visit to Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, accompanied by over 1,000 armed police and soldiers. The uprising was fueled by years of Israeli violations of the Oslo Accords, rapid settlement expansion that doubled the settler population from 200,000 to 400,000 between 1993 and 2000, and the failure of peace negotiations. Israeli occupation forces killed 6,371 Palestinians over the following decade, including 1,317 minors, with at least 2,996 of the fatalities being civilians who did not participate in hostilities when killed.
In 2023, Israeli occupation forces launched a genocide in Gaza on 7 October, killing at least 71,600 Palestinians, including 20,100 children and over 28,000 women and girls. Israeli forces injured more than 169,000 people and killed at least 1,722 health and aid workers. The assault destroyed 83 percent of all structures in Gaza and 84 percent of health facilities. Israeli forces carried out more than 790 attacks on health facilities and imposed a complete siege that caused at least 459 people, including 154 children, to die from starvation. Nearly 1.9 million Palestinians—90 percent of Gaza's population—were forcibly displaced.
In 1982, Israeli-backed Lebanese Phalange militias carried out the Sabra and Shatila massacre by killing between 2,000 and 3,500 Palestinian refugees and Lebanese civilians over 43 hours. Israeli occupation forces surrounded the camps, prevented residents from escaping, and illuminated the area with flares throughout the night while the massacre took place.
